Why Web Accessibility is Important

Web accessibility means designing a website so that people with different abilities can access, understand, and interact with its content. This can include people with visual, hearing, physical, or cognitive disabilities.
Accessibility is especially important for a health and wellness website like Gut Forward. Everyone should have the opportunity to access information about digestive health, nutrition, and wellness regardless of how they interact with a website.
Making Websites Easier to Use
There are many accessibility features that can make online content easier to use. Some common examples include:
- Larger text and readable fonts for people who have difficulty seeing smaller text.
- High-contrast options that make text and other content easier to see.
- Text-to-speech and screen-reader support for people who cannot easily read content on a screen.
- Keyboard navigation for visitors who have difficulty using a mouse.
- Closed captions and alternative text to make videos and images more accessible.
Accessibility on Gut Forward
I installed Accessibility by UserWay on Gut Forward to provide visitors with additional accessibility options. The accessibility menu allows users to adjust different features based on their individual needs.
Adding accessibility features benefits more than just people with disabilities. Larger text, clearer navigation, readable content, and other accessibility improvements can make a website easier for everyone to use.
For Gut Forward, accessibility supports my goal of making helpful health information available to as many people as possible.
